Our Story
HOW IT BEGAN
Every traveller's journey has a unique beginning.
No one just wakes up one day on an adventure of a lifetime—almost like they’ve teleported into the great unknown!
Although how amazing would that be? The truth is, you choose to get out there and begin your journey.
Or does it choose you?! Mmmm…

Well, no matter what, we chose to step out into our Great Adventure, wherever it would take us.
However, things weren’t quite as ‘rosy’ or picture-perfect for us when making this decision.
Time to Rewind to Where it All Began!
For about 3 years, Dale and I were managing a camp and conference centre and were making some major headway in developing the establishment and building the ministry. It was our perfect little paradise—a gorgeous campground for hosting groups, school camps, and leadership getaways, nestled along a beautiful river in South Africa's countryside, in the Southern Drakensberg (near the idyllic farming town of Underberg, if you’re curious!).
A little sneak peek: Our home overlooked the Umzimkhulu River, and these were the views from our verandah.
But sadly, due to the heavy restrictions inflicted on the travel industry by COVID-19 from 2020, the owners of the establishment were forced to sell, leaving us rather unexpectedly without a job.
We weighed up all our options—looked for other work, explored staying in the area or moving elsewhere, whether it would be better to buy a place, or rent. But nothing shouted “Yes” or gave us that much-needed sense of peace when assessing these types of options.
Until one very average day arrived.
I was standing over the stove cooking dinner for us, lost in my thoughts of what the future held for us. I had peace that God held our future, but facing the stress of retrenchment, coupled with relocating the entire conference’s assets, AND not knowing where or what we were doing, was incredibly intense.
We literally had a few months to move and root up our lives… but into what exactly?
Suddenly, Dale walked into the kitchen with a peculiar skip in his step. I knew he was mulling over something in his head.
He sat on the countertop opposite me, stroked his beard for a moment, deep in thought, and said:
“Love, let’s sell everything, get ourselves a caravan, and travel.”
I thought about it for a second, smiled, and with my spatula in hand, walked over to him and gave him a BIG HIGH-FIVE! “Yes, let’s do it!”
Dale looked surprised at me for a moment. “Are you sure?”
“I’m very sure!” And that was it. The decision was made—no looking back.
We instantly experienced an incredible sense of peace when deciding that this would be our next step—daring to venture into the wildly, scary, and beautifully wondrous unknown before us.
We soon had only two months to sell most of our belongings, pack up, and prepare the conference centre for its new owners, all while trying to organise our new mobile life. It was pretty crazy, to say the least! I don’t think I’ve ever been a bigger bundle of exhaustion and stress in all my life.
Oh, and did I mention that we didn’t have sufficient time to get ourselves a caravan?
Thankfully, my parents were able to lend us their caravan to get us started on our journey, allowing us more time to search properly for our own little house.
Well, by the time we drove out onto that dusty dirt road leading out of the campsite, with our entire little house trailing behind us, we were so tired but brimming with great anticipation for the adventure that lay before us.
Where Are We Today?
Now, writing this, we’ve been doing this travelling, working remotely, and mobile-life thing for over 3 years! It has been incredible for us—as a couple and as individuals.
We have grown so much and learnt so much along the way, and I can truly say that it was one of the best decisions we ever made.
Before, I was very susceptible to becoming a rather big ‘bundle of worry’ when life became challenging or unpredictable. Now, I’ve never held greater peace and rest than I know now. I have never experienced greater freedom from worry and anxiety than on this journey.
It’s also been a wonderful privilege to experience life this way, as so many don’t have the opportunity to do what we do. Every day is taken as a gift—a treasure—a remarkable 24 hours’ worth making the most of.
You may be wondering if we miss the “normal” life?
Well, the camping, mobile life is definitely unique and something to adapt to. Yes, we have to use public ablutions, and don’t have a large, comfy couch to sink into after a long day at work, and sometimes we are hit by some really nasty weather.
But, we’ve grown to embrace every part of the lifestyle and the journey, with everything life throws at us—from the incredible highs and lows to everything in between.
Would I change anything?
No. Absolutely nothing!
We get to see and experience incredible places, see such beautiful things, and meet the most incredible people.
We have discovered the full freedom of contentment in the simple things of life.
And, we get to realise true rest and peace in the unpredictable unknown that so often stands before us.
There’s so much freedom and joy in experiencing life this way.
Month to month, we get to soak in all the natural wonders around us, from timeless estuaries and river systems to magnificent untouched beaches, and jaw-dropping mountain roads and views… all in our ‘backyard’!
And best of all, as a very happily married couple, we get to make the most unforgettable memories together along the way.
So, are you ready to join us on our adventure and to embrace whatever unique adventure awaits you, too?
If so, buckle up, my fellow traveller, and enjoy the ride of a lifetime!
You won’t regret it.
